Use a longer thread than usual and wrap one half of it around a large blunt needle so that it is out of the way until you are ready to use it for the other half of the stitches.
You insert the needle in the fabric above or below your work so that you can wrap the unused thread around the ends of the needle in figure eights. The needle needs to be parked somewhere on the fabric out of your way.
