"Stiletto or Mellore"

This tool is used with metal thread embroidery. The pointed end is like an awl, the rounded end is used to move the metal threads and position them as needed on the design. The metal threads can be very hard on delicate fingers. Needles are not the best tool for moving stiff metal threads around the curve of a design. By the way an awl has many names. The French use a long needle that I translate as a wire spear, in the United States we use a stiletto or awl, and the English use a Mellore. ©2002 Linda Fontenot, www.AmericanFolkArts.com
